Verse for a Waking eye

I don't want to be "Mr. Always right"
Nor do I want to speak the highest erudition
I don't need the praise of the scholars around
Or the applause of a blind worshipper
I don't want to please a gazer blank
Or surprise the boy who lame stands
To be the gorgeous of all the glamour I don't want,
And allure the drunk eyes of a lusty maid
I don't want to be the fastest
I don't want to be the brightest
I don't want to be the biggest
Or the steepest or the richest
I don't want to be anywhere the best
I don't want it, if I am to rule lest
For what joy is life if I cannot
Share the tears of my fellow men
Or hug my dear upon her success
And kiss the good omen on her brow
I want to be like the child who lives
Like the light in a man's eye
Who can touch a brother's heart like a brother
And share his spirit with a smiling tear
